National Waterfront Museum, Swansea. May 24 2006
Members of Dragon Arts started work on the Opera Project back in November 2005.
Initially a series of regular Tuesday workshops took participants through many of the techniques involved in setting and performing an Opera. Some of the members also came to see SCO’s production of “The Pearl Fishers” at the Swansea Grand Theatre.
After the Christmas holidays the stalwart members of the group started to look at various ways of writing a work for the stage: starting with a visual image, words, objects or sounds. This process involved many of the disciplines which members follow at Dragon Arts; pottery, photography, graphics, visual art, creative writing, computing and, of course, music.
This was the beginning of creating the performance of “Cars to Mars” at The National Waterfront Museum Swansea on May 24 2006.
The creation of the melodic and poetic elements has largely come from the members themselves. The team from SCO has embellished and helped organise these elements into an opera for some of the members to perform in alongside the professional practitioners.
Over the 7 months of the project innumerable members, and staff, of Dragon Arts have been involved. Some members sampled the workshops and decided that performance was not for them, but have, none-the-less, contributed to the overall dynamic of “Cars to Mars”. We thank them all for their interest and support in bringing the opera to fruition.
